RealTime Advanced: Installing the Software in a Network Environment
Article Details

Last Updated
7th o May, 2008

This document is meant to be a guideline for installing in a networked environment, and provides a breakdown of what you should expect to see during the installation of the product.  The goal here is to install certain parts of the software on a local workstation while other aspects of the software are installed on a remote machine for centralized management.

  • The Installation Directory will be resident on the local machine
  • The Data Root Directory will be installed on the remote machine

There are a variety of reasons to do this … you may have a need for multiple users to have access to the software and storing the data in a centralized location is necessity for this, or you may want to ensure that the data you are working with is regularly backed up on a machine that is part of a regular backup procedure.(like a server).

1.       To install RealTime insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive, the setup program will begin
          automatically.
2.
The first interactive screen that you will see will be the “Welcome” screen …

3.
Read the messages on the screen, and when finished click [Next >]
4.
The next interactive screen you will see will be the “Choose Program Location” screen, the
          response here
will affect where the Installation Directory is located.

For a network installation you will want the Installation Directory to be on each user’s local machine.  This will allow certain files to be resident on the each user’s machine, and will improve the performance of the software.

NOTE:     The Installation Directory should always be on the local machine … C:\RT3.1 is the default location … if you decide to adjust this to another drive letter on the local machine do so here, but make sure that the folder name that is used for the Installation Directory is RT3.1

5.        The next interactive screen you will see will be the “Choose Data Location” screen, the
response here will affect where the Data Root Directory is located.
6.
For a network installation you will want the Data Root Directory on a remote machine.  To do
this you will want to use the [Change…] button.

For a network installation you will want to configure the Data Root Directory to be located on the remote machine.

If the goal is to allow multiple users access to the software this action will fulfill that goal.

All users will have a centralized location that they are working with, and changes made by a user on one machine will be evident on all machines.

7.       When you use the [Change …] button a “Select Data Root” window will appear, this is where
you will define the location to be used for the Data Root Directory on the remote machine.

8.
Once you adjust the location of the Data Root Directory to the remote machine the “Choose
Data Location” Window will change to show the location on the remote machine.  Click [Next >]
          to proceed.

NOTE:       In the example shown I have also changed the name of the Data Root from “RT3.1” to “DataRoot” so that it isn’t confused with the RT3.1 Installation Directory which will be on each user’s local machine.  This is merely a recommendation, you can call this directory whatever makes sense to your situation.

9.       The next interactive screen you will see will be the “Backup Replaced Files” screen.

If you decide to have the installer create a backup directory for the purposes stated it is highly recommended that you allow this directory to be installed on each of the local machines.

NOTE:     The Backup File Destination Directory should always be on the local machine … C:\RT3.1\BACKUP  is the default location … if you chose to adjust the Installation Directory to another drive letter on the local machine then you will still want the Backup File Destination Directory to be located within the RT3.1 folder.

10.   The next interactive screen you will see will be the “Select Components” screen.

NOTE:     If you would like to have demonstration data installed with a demo company database file and enough data to allow you to see the various reports available within the program then select “RealTime 3.1” and “Demonstration Data.” You will see this demo data when you open the program, but you will still have the ability to create a company based upon your own needs in the Company Setup area of the program.

11.   The next interactive screen you will see will be the “Select Program Manager Group” screen.

NOTE:     Here we are defining the name of the folder that you are currently installing.  By accepting the default of “RealTime” you will be able to navigate to the installed products by moving through the main Windows [Start] Menu and moving through your list of Programs.  RealTime will be among the program folders within this list.

The programs you should expect to see in the RealTime folder are as follows:

12.   The next interactive screen you will see will be the “Serial Number and CD Key” screen.

  • If this is a demo version of the software (from the website or a CD) then click [Demo >] to proceed to the next screen.
  • If you have a Serial Number and CD Key enter it here, the [Demo >] button will change to reflect [Next >] to proceed to the next screen.

To accept the installation as a demo installation click [Demo >] and the program will proceed to install necessary folders and files.

If you chose to purchase the product you will be able to adjust the license to reflect the Serial Number and CD Key after installation.

13.   You will see a status bar showing how far along the installation is …

 14.   Finally, you will see the “RealTime 3.1 Installation” screen with a message stating that the
installation has been successfully installed.  Click [Finish] to finalize the installation and close
        the Installation Wizard.
