Q: Say an employee is punching in and out frequently, either due to an odd schedule or personal time needed - breaking up the day's schedule with several interruptions; Is there an easy way for employees to check their in-out status from the clock, so that they will know if they have forgotten to punch in, or forgotten to punch out, rather than continuing the error if they are missing a punch? (And if they discover they are off by a punch, what's the best thing to do?)
A: There is usually not a way to tell from the clock whether you are punched in or out, and the best thing for an employee to do is to assume they are punched correctly, and to make future punches normally. RealTime is very good at fixing missed punches, and if an employee makes extra punches "for good measure" they can make the problem worse. The Card Swipe Clocks do provide a scrolling message indicating in or out at each punch, and the Hand Print Clock requires you to specify in or out when you perform a punch.
That said, there are two ways to get an employee's in/out status, either from RealTime's Who's In Report, or by running a separate module called "Employee Status", available as an optional add-on to RealTime Advanced. Both of these methods require the data from the clock to be current, and with most time clocks the data is "live" so it's always current. It's not common, but with some clocks in some network environments the data is polled on a scheduled or manual basis, so you'll need to know how your clock is configured to rely on these methods.
